Tesla Tron Mode Sounds: Lock, Turn Signal & Startup Audio Explained
Tesla's Tron Mode Easter egg is one of the coolest features the company ever shipped. Activate it and your car transforms β the UI goes electric blue, the headlights pulse, and every sound the car makes shifts to something that could have come straight out of the Grid. But what exactly changes audio-wise, and can you get those Tron sounds without enabling the full Easter egg? Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Tesla Tron Mode?
Tron Mode is a hidden Easter egg Tesla added around 2020. When activated, it applies a full visual and audio transformation to your vehicle:
Tron Mode is available on Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y with the right firmware version. Cybertruck owners have a variation with different visual elements.
How to Activate Tron Mode
The activation method has changed across firmware versions, but the most reliable method as of 2026:
- Open Controls on the touchscreen
- Tap Safety β scroll down to Autopilot section
- Tap the Tesla logo in the top-left corner 10 times rapidly
- A prompt appears asking if you want to enter Tron Mode
- Confirm β your car will restart the UI in Tron theme
Some older firmware versions use Controls β Toybox β Easter Eggs. If the tap method doesn't work, check Toybox first.
Note: Tron Mode disables itself when you power the car off. You'll need to re-enable it each session.
What Sounds Change in Tron Mode
This is where it gets interesting for audio nerds:
Lock/Unlock Sound
Tron Mode replaces the standard factory beep (or your custom LockChime.wav) with a short, synthesized Tron-style chime. It has a distinct sci-fi electronic quality β higher pitched and more melodic than the default beep.
Critical note for custom sound users: When Tron Mode is active, Tesla overrides your custom LockChime.wav. Your Boombox folder is ignored. If you've installed a custom lock sound, it won't play while Tron Mode is enabled.
Turn Signal Sound
The standard click is replaced with an electronic tick β similar to the lock sound, it has that signature Tron synthesizer quality. This is what's driving most of the search interest: Tesla owners notice the turn signal sound change and want to know what it's called or how to get it permanently.
Interior Sounds
The Tron Mode audio package also affects some interior UI sounds. Notification tones and chime alerts pick up a subtle Tron-ish quality.
Can You Keep Tron Mode On Permanently?
No β Tron Mode resets on every power cycle. Tesla has never offered it as a persistent setting. This is a deliberate choice (it's an Easter egg, not a feature).
This is also why many owners end up searching for "tesla tron mode sounds download" β they want the audio permanently, not just during one session.
How to Get Tron Sounds Without Tron Mode
Since Tron Mode can't be kept on and overrides custom sounds anyway, there's a better approach: install a Tron-inspired LockChime.wav that plays every time you lock, regardless of mode.
We have several Tron-style sounds in the library:
These install as a standard LockChime.wav via USB. They work on every Tesla with Boombox support (Model S/X/3/Y/Cybertruck, firmware 2022+), they persist across power cycles, and they don't conflict with any other settings.
Browse the Tron-style sounds or check the full Sci-Fi & Sound Effects category for similar audio.
Installation: Tron Lock Sound in 3 Steps
- Download the Tron Mode Lock Sound (WAV file, already formatted for Tesla)
- Copy to USB β create a folder called
Boomboxand placeLockChime.wavinside it - Enable in Tesla β Controls β Toybox β Boombox β select the USB source
That's it. Your lock sound will now play the Tron chime every time you lock the car, no Easter egg required.

Tron Mode on Cybertruck: What's Different
Cybertruck's Tron Mode implementation differs from the sedan/SUV lineup:
Cybertruck Tron Mode also resets on power cycle, so the same workaround applies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Tron Mode work on Model 3?
Yes. Tron Mode is available on all Model 3 variants with compatible firmware. The activation method may vary β try the 10-tap logo method described above.
Why did my Tesla's turn signal sound change suddenly?
If you activated Tron Mode (possibly by accidentally tapping the logo repeatedly), your turn signal sound will change to the Tron-style electronic tick. Power cycle the car to reset it, or go to Controls β Toybox to check Easter egg status.
Does LockChime.wav work with Tron Mode?
No. Tron Mode overrides the Boombox custom sound folder entirely. Custom lock sounds only play when Tron Mode is inactive.
Can I permanently keep Tron sounds?
Yes β but not via Tron Mode itself. Download a Tron-inspired LockChime.wav from our library and install it via USB. It will play every time you lock, permanently.
Is there a Tron Mode for Cybertruck?
Yes, Cybertruck has its own version of Tron Mode with more dramatic visual effects. The audio package is similar but with a slightly different tone character.
