source Source: Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977, 20th Century Fox). Sound designer Ben Burtt created the lightsaber by layering the hum of idle 35mm film projectors with the buzz of a CRT TV near a microphone. The resulting sound won a Special Achievement Oscar. Use case: your Tesla just ignited a Jedi weapon. Trivia: Burtt discovered the TV feedback effect by accident when walking past a TV with his microphone — the same serendipity that defined many of cinema's most iconic sound designs.
