Model Y 2024 (pre-Juniper): Confirmed Compatible

The 2024 Model Y shipped before Tesla's Juniper interior refresh. It uses USB-A ports in the center console. Boombox custom lock sounds work on all 2024 trim levels with current firmware (2024.x). The Juniper refresh arrived at the very end of 2024 in some markets — if your console has USB-C ports, see the Model Y 2025 guide.

/ steps

Six steps for the 2024 Model Y

Download a sound

Browse the library and download your preferred WAV. Every file is pre-named LockChime.wav.

All 1000+ sounds on TeslaLockSound are pre-formatted at 44.1kHz 16-bit PCM — no conversion needed.

Format USB as FAT32 or exFAT

The 2024 Model Y center console uses USB-A. A small 8–16 GB thumb drive works perfectly.

macOS: Disk Utility → Erase → MS-DOS (FAT). Windows: right-click drive → Format → FAT32. NTFS will not be recognized.

Create the Boombox folder

At the USB root, create a single folder named Boombox (case-sensitive).

Do not add subfolders for lock chimes — LockChime.wav goes directly inside Boombox/.

Copy LockChime.wav into Boombox/

Drop the downloaded file inside the Boombox folder. Final path: Boombox/LockChime.wav.

Confirm via file browser before unplugging. Wrong path is the #1 cause of USB not appearing.

Plug into center console (USB-A)

Use either of the two USB-A data ports in the 2024 Model Y center console. Glovebox port also works.

Rear USB ports (behind center console) are power-only — Boombox will not detect them.

Enable in Toybox → Boombox → Lock Sound

On the touchscreen: Toybox → Boombox → Lock Sound → change from Default to USB. Lock once to test.

If USB option doesn't appear, remove and reinsert the drive, then reopen Boombox.

2024 Model Y: Known Issues & Firmware Notes

USB-A only — adapters work

Standard 2024 Model Y has USB-A ports in the console. USB-C drives work with a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Both sides of the center console data slot are active.

NTFS format will fail silently

Windows formats new drives as NTFS by default. Tesla's Boombox will not mount NTFS. Reformat to FAT32 or exFAT before copying files — the Boombox USB option simply won't appear otherwise.

Rear USB ports are power-only

The two USB ports behind the center console are for charging only. Only the front center console ports and glovebox port are data-capable for Boombox.

Boombox missing after OTA update

Occasionally a 2024 firmware update temporarily hides Toybox features during install. Wait 10 minutes and recheck. If still missing, trigger a reboot (hold both steering wheel scroll buttons).

Light Cycle plays instead of USB

This is almost always a file path issue. Verify the path is exactly Boombox/LockChime.wav — not Boombox/Locked/LockChime.wav, not the USB root. Remove and reinsert the drive after confirming.

Early 2024 units: check firmware first

Vehicles built in early 2024 may still be on 2023.x firmware. Boombox works on all of these, but updating to 2024.x ensures you have the latest Boombox UI. Go to Software → Schedule update if available.

/ pre-flight

60-Second Pre-Flight Checklist

  • USB formatted as FAT32 or exFAT (not NTFS).
  • File named LockChime.wav exactly — capital L and C.
  • Path is Boombox/LockChime.wav at USB root — not a subfolder.
  • Drive plugged into a front data port (center console or glovebox).
  • Sound file is under 5 seconds long.
  • Toybox → Boombox → Lock Sound set to USB.

Model Y 2024 — Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tesla Model Y 2024 support custom lock sounds?

Yes. All 2024 Model Y vehicles (pre-Juniper) support Boombox custom lock sounds via USB. Place LockChime.wav at Boombox/LockChime.wav on a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, insert into a center console data port, and enable USB in Toybox → Boombox → Lock Sound.

Which USB port should I use on a 2024 Model Y?

The 2024 Model Y (pre-Juniper) has two USB-A ports in the center console plus a USB-A port in the glovebox. Use either center console port or the glovebox port — all three are data-capable. The two rear USB ports are power-only and will not work for Boombox.

Why is the USB option not showing in Boombox on my 2024 Model Y?

Three common causes: the USB drive is formatted NTFS instead of FAT32/exFAT, the file is at the USB root instead of inside Boombox/LockChime.wav, or the drive is plugged into a rear power-only port. Reformat the drive as FAT32, verify the folder path, and use the center console or glovebox port.

What firmware version does the 2024 Model Y need for Boombox?

Boombox has been available on Model Y since 2020.44 era software. All 2024 Model Y vehicles shipped with software that supports Boombox. If you do not see Toybox → Boombox, trigger a software update from the service menu and check again.

Can I use a USB-C drive on the 2024 Model Y?

The standard 2024 Model Y (pre-Juniper) has USB-A ports in the console. You can use a USB-C drive with a USB-C to USB-A adapter. The drive still needs to be formatted FAT32 or exFAT and contain Boombox/LockChime.wav.
