Tesla Lock Sound Not Available? How to Get Custom Sounds in Any Region
You bought a Tesla, found the perfect lock sound, and went to the Toybox menu — but there's no Boombox option. Or you're in a country where Tesla seems to have disabled custom sounds. Before you give up: custom lock sounds work in every region, including the UK and EU. The method is different from what most guides show. Here's the fix.
Why Boombox Is Missing in Some Regions
There are three reasons your Tesla might not show the Boombox menu:
1. No External Speaker (UK & Most of Europe)
Many UK and EU-delivered Teslas ship without a Pedestrian Warning System (PWS) external speaker. EU Regulation 540/2014 mandates an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) for EVs at speeds under 20 km/h, and Tesla's Boombox — which plays arbitrary audio — can't guarantee compliance. So Tesla simply doesn't install the external speaker in most European-market vehicles.
No speaker = no Boombox menu in Toybox. It's a hardware limitation, not a software bug.
2. US Recall Disabled Boombox While Driving
In the US, NHTSA found that Boombox-while-driving violated Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 141 (pedestrian alert requirements). Tesla issued two recalls in 2022 (22V-063 and 22V-235), disabling Boombox in Drive, Neutral, Reverse, and during Summon — all via OTA firmware updates. Boombox still works when parked in the US.
3. Pre-May 2019 Vehicles (All Regions)
Teslas built before approximately May 2019 don't have the PWS speaker hardware at all, regardless of country. The Boombox feature launched in December 2020 and requires hardware that wasn't standard before mid-2019.
The Fix: USB Lock Chime (Works Everywhere)
Here's what most people don't realize: the custom lock chime via USB is completely separate from Boombox. It plays through the car's internal speaker system, not the external PWS speaker. That means:
How to Set It Up
- Get your sound file — browse 950+ free Tesla lock sounds or use our audio converter to format your own
- Prepare the USB — format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT (USB format guide)
- Create the folder — make a folder called
Boomboxat the root of the USB - Add the file — place your
LockChime.wavinside theBoomboxfolder - Plug in and select — insert the USB, go to Toybox > Boombox (or Vehicle > Safety > Lock Confirmation Sound on newer firmware), and select the USB option
Wait — You Said Boombox Is Missing?
The lock chime selection might appear under a different menu path than Boombox, depending on your firmware version and region:
| Firmware | Menu Location |
|----------|--------------|
| Pre-2026 | Toybox > Boombox > Lock Sound |
| 2026.2+ | Vehicle > Safety > Lock Confirmation Sound |
| 2026.8+ | Vehicle > Locks > Lock Confirmation Sound |
Even if the Toybox Boombox entry is hidden, the Lock Confirmation Sound setting should appear in your vehicle's Safety or Locks menu. This is the lock chime setting — it reads from USB and plays through cabin speakers.
What About the External Speaker Sound?
If you specifically want sounds to play outside the car (the Boombox experience), your options depend on your region:
The good news: the lock chime is what most people actually want. It plays every time you lock or unlock, and it's audible from outside through the cabin speakers at moderate volume.
Troubleshooting by Region
UK/EU: "I Don't See Any Sound Options"
- Check Vehicle > Safety or Vehicle > Locks for a "Lock Confirmation Sound" toggle
- Make sure your USB is FAT32-formatted with
Boombox/LockChime.wavon it - Try a soft reboot (hold both scroll wheels for 10 seconds) after inserting the USB
- If the menu still doesn't appear, your firmware may need updating — Tesla has been improving lock chime support in 2026 updates
US: "Boombox Works but Lock Sound Doesn't"
- Boombox external sounds ≠ lock chime. They're separate features
- For the lock chime: place
LockChime.wavon USB, select it under Lock Confirmation Sound - If your lock chime disappeared after an update, see lock sound resets after update
Pre-2019 Tesla: "Nothing Works"
- Confirm your build date (check your vehicle's "About" screen or VIN decoder)
- If built before May 2019, the USB lock chime method through cabin speakers is your only option — and it works well
- The sound plays through the car's interior speakers, which are more than loud enough to hear from outside at normal distance
FAQ
Can I use custom lock sounds on a UK Tesla?
Yes. The USB LockChime.wav method works on all UK-delivered Teslas. It plays through the cabin speakers, not the external speaker — so it's unaffected by the missing PWS hardware.
Why does my American friend have Boombox but I don't?
US-market Teslas have the PWS external speaker installed. Your European-market Tesla likely doesn't. But you can still set a custom lock chime via USB — it just plays through the cabin speakers instead.
Will Tesla ever enable external Boombox sounds in Europe?
Unlikely while EU Regulation 540/2014 is in effect. The regulation requires a consistent AVAS sound at low speeds, and custom Boombox audio conflicts with that requirement. The lock chime (plays only when locking, not while driving) isn't affected by this regulation.
Is the cabin speaker lock chime loud enough to hear outside?
Yes. It's clearly audible from 15-20 feet away with windows closed. In a quiet garage or parking lot, it's just as satisfying as the external speaker version. If it's too quiet, see our volume fix guide.
